New Engine Oil Category

Gasoline Engines

Licensing of API Service Category SL began mid-summer of 2001. Performance benefits of this new engine oil category include:

  • Improved Fuel Economy (Short and Long-Term)
  • Improved Oxidation Stability
  • Lowered Oil Consumption
  • Improved High Temperature Deposit Control

Also new, some automakers are recommending the use of a 5W-20 engine oil for year round use within segments of their engine lineup.


Heavy - Duty Diesel Engines

Licensing of API Service Category CI-4 will begin fall of 2002. This category was designed to meet the performance requirements for the "next generation" diesel engines equipped with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). New EPA Diesel Emission Requirements are effective October 2002. Performance benefits of this new category will include:

  • Improved Oxidation Stability at higher temperatures
  • Improved flow-ability at start-up
  • Improved control of Soot at much higher concentration levels
  • Control of increased acidity expected from the EGR stream
